BCMPUPnP_Hunter: A 100k Botnet Turns Home Routers to Email Spammers

(Last Updated On: November 11, 2018)

Miscreants are exploiting UPnP on your home router! Yes, we have another example of the UPnP Universal Plug and Play protocol being used on your home router to allow criminals to use it without your permission. Hui Wang (NetLab 360) and the RootKiter Team have dug into a malware system that is using UPnP to break into home routers. They have shared the details in BCMPUPnP_Hunter: A 100k Botnet Turns Home Routers to Email Spammers.

For the home user, the #1 thing action is to TURN off UPnP on your home router. This is done by logging into your home router, look for the section that has UPnP on or off, and then turning it off. For example on a Linksys E- and WRT-series router, you would:

  1. Open a browser and type in If you do not know your router’s IP check your device’s IP then go to “.1” For example, right now on my home router my IP is and my gateway is I would then to a to get to my home router.
  2. Enter your password to log in to the Web interface
  3. Go to Administration and look for the UPnP section
  4. Select “Disable” under UPnP and Allow User to Configure
  5. Click Save.

You now have UPnP turned off.

What if I need help turning off UPnP?

Call your Internet Service Provider (ISP), Broadband, or Cable Operator if you need help turning off UPnP.

Which Home Routers Might Be Infected?

The BCMPUPnP_Hunter investigation found the following home router types infected (not the huge variety in the list below). If you see your Home Router in this list, do a quick safety check:

  1. Log into your home router.
  2. Make sure UPnP is turned off.
  3. Use the tool to update the software to the latest version.

If you do not know how to upgrade your Home Router, call your ISP, Cable Operator, or Broadband company for assistance. Making sure your home router is updated is something that should be checked once per quarter. You do not want your Home being used for criminal activities.
